Man wrongly convicted of killing 2 Michigan hunters in 1990 agrees to $5.25M settlement
Jeff Titus was freed in 2023 after nearly 21 years in prison, and prosecutors later erased his murder convictions over withheld evidence claims.
On Monday, Jeff Titus agreed to a $5.25 million settlement for his wrongful conviction, having spent nearly 21 years in prison after alleging police withheld evidence that could have aided his defense.
Doug Estes and Jim Bennett were fatally shot near Titus' property in Kalamazoo County in 1990; although investigators initially cleared him, prosecutors filed murder charges 12 years later, portraying him as a hothead.
Students at The Innocence Clinic and investigators Jacinda Davis and Susan Simpson discovered a 30-page file at the county sheriff's office linking the crimes to Ohio serial killer Thomas Dillon.
Prosecutors requested erasure of Titus' murder convictions in 2023, and attorney Wolf Mueller stated the settlement allows him to "put this part of his life behind him."
While the lawsuit centered on police failure to disclose evidence, Thomas Dillon died in prison in 2011; the case underscores media investigations through Undisclosed and Investigation Discovery in raising doubts about Titus' guilt.
A man who was wrongfully convicted of the murder of two hunters in Michigan and spent more than twenty years in prison has reached a settlement with the justice department. He will receive $5.25 million (€4.51 million) in damages.
