2 bodies found up isolated B.C. forest road, police say deaths don't appear criminal

Police say evidence from the scene suggests the two deaths were not criminal, and investigators are still confirming the identities of the man and woman.

  • On Tuesday, June 23, 2026, the Nakusp RCMP reported that two people found on the remote Tate Creek Forest Service Road near Nakusp are not being treated as criminal deaths.
  • Investigators determined the incident began on June 16 when a vehicle became stuck in rugged terrain near Upper Arrow Lake and subsequently caught fire in the isolated area.
  • Corporal Paul Britton of the Nakusp RCMP confirmed the pair have been tentatively identified; a man with apparent burn injuries and a woman with no obvious injuries were found at the scene.
  • The British Columbia Coroners Service has assumed conduct of the investigation to confirm the identities of the deceased and advance the case, working closely with police.
  • While the investigation remains in early stages and no conclusions have been made, evidence at the scene suggests that "criminality is not a factor in either death." Anyone with information should contact the Nakusp RCMP at 250-265-3677.
