Man who raped girl, 14, after picking her up from Aberdeen taxi rank jailed

Victor Popa was sentenced to 12 years and placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely after a predatory attack on a vulnerable 14-year-old he offered a lift to, police said.

  • Victor Popa, 35, received a 12-year prison term at the High Court in Edinburgh.
  • Victor Popa lured a vulnerable 14-year-old from a taxi rank in Aberdeen, offering a lift home despite not being a taxi driver and unknown to her on 15 January 2023.
  • CCTV and text messages formed central evidence in the prosecution, COPFS said, while police identified Popa after a significant investigation and arrested him two days later before his January 30, 2026 guilty verdict.
  • Judge Alison Stirling told the court the attack caused 'lasting psychological and physical harm', and Popa was added to the sex offenders register with a non-harassment order banning contact.
  • Authorities praised the victim's courage and emphasised ongoing support for victims of sexual crime; police and prosecutors pledged robust investigations, with Faye Cook stating 'Violence against women and girls has no place in our society'.
