- Boelter spent months stalking his targets before arriving at the Hortman home disguised as a police officer on June 14, 2025, at approximately 3:30 a.m. He rang the doorbell claiming to conduct a welfare check, then shot Mark Hortman multiple times before killing Melissa as she fled upstairs.
- "My wife and I now live with injuries," Sen. John Hoffman said during the hearing. Yvette Hoffman recounted her fight for survival: "I will never forget looking down and watching my blood slowly stream down that white washing machine as I felt myself sinking to the floor."
- Boelter pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty, sparking anger from Mark Hortman's sister Lisa Hortman Bean, who stated, "It will not offer me peace of mind that he will have room and board provided for the rest of his life, paid for by my tax dollars."
- Harold Haluptzok, Melissa's father, told the court, "It is impossible to realize the damage that has been done not only to our family, but to our society." He wished the perpetrator had discussed political differences with Melissa instead of resorting to violence.
