Ten Hag Hits Out at 'Toxic' Man United and Admits 'Embarrassment' over McTominay
Ten Hag said United broke transfer promises and sold Scott McTominay despite his objections, while Napoli turned the midfielder into a title winner.
On Tuesday, Erik ten Hag, technical director at FC Twente, accused former Manchester United bosses of breaking promises made during his tenure, specifically claiming they sold Scott McTominay against his direct instructions.
During crisis talks in Ibiza in 2024, club leadership assured Ten Hag of loyalty, communication, and alignment on transfers; he received a one-year contract extension two weeks after winning the FA Cup final.
United sold McTominay to Napoli for £25.7 million in 2024 to fund the £42 million signing of Manuel Ugarte, a move Ten Hag said left him "very embarrassed and disappointed."
Dismissing Michael Carrick would be "100% not the solution," Ten Hag argued, while criticizing the club's "toxic culture" sparked by senior players and perpetuated by the board.
Since Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos takeover, Ten Hag contended the club has lacked strategy and proper structures, requiring competence and alignment rather than constant managerial changes to recover.
