Man Killed Neighbour over a Noise Dispute and Recorded the Attack
The recording captured the victim’s final words and helped convict Hughes, who received a life sentence with a 12-year-and-180-day minimum term.
On Thursday, Judge Nicklin sentenced James Hughes, 67, to life imprisonment with a 13-year minimum term for murdering neighbor Harry Turner, 68, at The Old Palace Flats in St Asaph on Christmas Day last year.
Tensions between the neighbors had simmered for months over noise complaints, with Turner leaving voicemails stating he was "at breaking point" and "going to hurt someone" before the fatal confrontation.
Hughes recorded the entire attack on a Dictaphone, capturing Turner pleading "Get off me, I can't breathe" while Hughes struck him repeatedly with his walking stick and refused to stop despite the pleas.
Michelle Appleton, the victim's sister, told the court a "knock at my door changed everything," while defense attorney Gordon Cole KC argued Hughes had no prior convictions and suffered poor health.
Judge Nicklin described Hughes' response as "angry, callous and cruel" but found the attack was not premeditated, imposing a life sentence reduced by 185 days for remand time already served.
