Man killed in third fatal shark attack in Australia in three weeks
Police said the 35-year-old was spearfishing with family when a suspected 4.5-metre shark attacked, the fourth fatal shark attack in Australia this year.
On Saturday, June 6, 2026, a 35-year-old man died after a suspected 4.5-metre shark attacked him while spearfishing with family near Michaelmas Island, off Albany. Paramedics treated him after he was brought to shore but were unable to revive him.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is assisting Western Australia Police with the investigation following the 11:25 am incident, urging residents to 'take additional caution in the Michaelmas Island area.'
Witnesses and SharkSmart alerts reported a 4.5-metre shark of an unknown species in King George Sound, approximately 10 metres off Michaelmas Island. The island sits roughly 13 kilometres from the coast of Albany.
This incident marks the fourth fatal shark attack in Australia this year, following a May 16 death off Rottnest Island. Western Australia Police will prepare a report for the coroner regarding the encounter.
Authorities advise the public to adhere to beach closures managed by Local Government Rangers and Surf Life Saving WA. Residents can report shark sightings to Water Police on 9442 8600.
