Son Jailed for Hiding His Mother's Death and Storing Her Body in a Freezer
Christopher Phillips admitted hiding his mother’s body and fraudulently claiming nearly £78,200 in benefits, the court heard.
- On Monday, Christopher Phillips was sentenced to two years and four months in prison by Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court for concealing his mother Sylvia Phillips' death in a freezer and fraudulently claiming £78,190 in benefits.
- Phillips became his mother's main carer in 2008, living "isolated lives" with her confined to the living room before she died on March 8, 2023; he then purchased a chest freezer to keep her near him.
- Police discovered the body on February 17 during a welfare check at their Porthcawl home, revealing Phillips had collected prescriptions and made 223 cash withdrawals from her accounts to sustain his deception.
- Sentencing the defendant, Recorder of Cardiff Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke remarked on the "indignity of being stored in a chest freezer," ordering Phillips serve 40% of his prison term in custody before release on license.
- Proceeds of Crime Act proceedings will now attempt to recover the funds, while defense counsel Ruth Smith cited an "extreme grief reaction" regarding his mental health; Phillips is currently in a "much better state" on remand.
