Man jailed over 2003 Salford rape for which Andrew Malkinson was wrongly imprisoned
DNA evidence linked Quinn to the rape, and the judge said the victim was left unconscious for half an hour.
Manchester Crown Court sentenced Paul Quinn to 24 years today for the 2003 rape and attempted strangulation, a verdict that exposed the wrongful conviction of Andrew Malkinson.
In 2004, a jury convicted Malkinson of the 2003 assault based solely on eyewitness identification, leading him to serve 17 years in prison for a crime Quinn actually committed.
A 2007 DNA profile extracted from the victim's vest top revealed 'Unknown Male 1', excluding Malkinson; an October 2022 police database search identified a one-in-a-billion match to Quinn.
Sentencing Quinn, Mr Justice Bright called the victim a 'hero' and stated it was 'utterly clear' Quinn knew Malkinson was wrongfully imprisoned throughout his 17-year sentence.
The miscarriage of justice triggered a public inquiry, investigations into former police officers for gross misconduct, and resignations of two Criminal Cases Review Commission heads.
