Helicopter Helps Crews Rescue Hiker After ‘Significant Fall’ on Grandfather Mountain
The hiker suffered a significant fall on the Profile Trail and was hoisted to a landing zone before being flown to a Tennessee hospital.
A hiker fell 50 feet on the Profile Trail at Grandfather Mountain on Saturday afternoon, prompting a helicopter airlift operation. North Carolina Emergency Management confirmed the rescue after the victim suffered what crews called a "significant fall."
Around noon on Saturday, Avery County 911 Communications alerted the Linville-Central Rescue Squad to the incident. Based on the mechanism of injury and initial medical assessment, officials determined a helicopter hoist operation was necessary to get the subject to definitive care.
NC-TF 8 was tasked with the hoist operation while ground crews hiked in equipment and medical supplies to the patient. Multiple agencies including the Linville Volunteer Fire Department and EMS Avery coordinated to reach the victim.
Rescuers transferred the hiker to a nearby landing zone where Highlands Emergency Air Rescue & Transport took over transport. The patient was airlifted to Johnson City Medical Center in Tennessee for treatment.
Linville-Central posted on Facebook expressing gratitude: "It takes a lot of cooperation and teamwork to make an operation like this successful." The department thanked all responding organizations for their coordination in the complex rescue.
