Man gets reduced sentence for 2024 Duluth murder
A judge reduced the sentence after ruling that two out-of-state convictions and a custody enhancement could count under updated guidelines.
On Friday, Judge Leslie Beiers resentenced Darrius Lamar Plummer to 16½ years in prison for the unintentional second-degree murder of Chantel Moose on April 12, 2024.
The Minnesota Court ordered a new sentence after the original proceeding relied on unverified out-of-state criminal history, prompting prosecutor Vicky Wanta to obtain certified records of forgery and firearm convictions.
Finding the laws "substantially similar", Beiers included an Illinois forgery conviction and a custody enhancement during Thursday's hearing, though she excluded a Michigan firearm conviction from the final calculation.
Beiers imposed the new term Friday, the same day she retired from the bench, finalizing a resentencing process that adjusted the term based on updated state sentencing guidelines.
Awaiting a petition review by the Minnesota Supreme Court, Plummer remains incarcerated at the Minnesota Correctional Facility, where he has been participating in programming and maintaining a clean record.
