Toronto’s child hunger rates nearly double as city sees 4.1M food bank visits: report
More than one in eight Toronto children now rely on food banks, while parents skip meals and visits remain above 4.1 million, the report says.
On Tuesday, the Daily Bread Food Bank released its 'Who's Hungry' report, revealing that more than one in eight children in Toronto now rely on food banks, nearly double the rate from 2022.
Rising food insecurity stems from a severe cost-of-living crisis, with one in four food bank clients spending their entire income on housing, forcing many working families to seek assistance.
Daily Bread CEO Neil Hetherington called the trend "alarming," noting that 67 per cent of parents skipped meals to feed their children, while 17 per cent reported a child went hungry weekly.
Food bank visits held steady at more than 4.1 million for the second consecutive year, as Kitty Raman Costa, executive director of the Parkdale Community Food Bank, noted an influx of working families.
Proposed solutions include a provincial Shelter Allowance Reserve Fund and a $100 million municipal investment to preserve affordable housing, which Hetherington says requires leadership to implement.
