Florida Flooding Kills 2; 23 Polling Places Moved
Emergency crews rescued hundreds as officials identified 2 deaths and warned that floodwaters could linger for days after the storm.
On Tuesday, Palm Bay Mayor Rob Medina confirmed two deaths following severe flooding in Palm Bay. Officials identified the victims as Joshua Bennett, 34, and Archie Richards, 78, after storms dropped over 23 inches of rain.
A low-pressure system over the Gulf caused continuous onshore flow, inundating Palm Bay and Brevard County with record-setting rain over 36 hours. Catastrophic flooding swept through streets, homes, and businesses.
Sheriff's deputies and The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission rescued over 160 people on Monday. "We're still doing search and rescues," said Don Walker, spokesperson for Brevard County Emergency Management.
Gov Jay Collins visited Palm Bay to meet affected families and assess damage. Officials are working with local leaders to determine the full extent of destruction as residents face major property losses.
Officials warned that flooding may persist for several days as water drains from affected areas. Persistent onshore flow will bring scattered showers to Florida's east coast on Tuesday, with additional rainfall of 1 to 2 inches possible.
