Man City Star Guehi Says Taking the Knee Has Lost Impact After Opting Against Anti-Racism Gesture – WTOP News
Marc Guehi said the anti-racism gesture may have lost its impact as the Premier League marked a campaign round dedicated to the issue.
Manchester City defender Marc Guehi did not take the knee before Saturday's match against Ipswich, opting instead to clap during the Premier League's "No Room For Racism" campaign.
The Premier League introduced the gesture in 2020 to support the Black Lives Matter campaign, but since the 2022-23 season, players have been invited to perform it only on specific occasions.
Speaking Monday at a news conference, Guehi said the gesture "might have lost its impact" and suggested he prefers clapping to show respect for the anti-racism campaign.
Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin also stood during the weekend's match against Manchester United, with manager Daniel Farke noting that "each individual is different" in showing respect.
In 2021, Crystal Palace player Wilfried Zaha stopped kneeling, describing the gesture as "degrading," highlighting ongoing debate over the most effective anti-racism methods in soccer.
