Police: Man arrested at D.C. Catholic church had 200 homemade explosives

Louis Geri, 41, was arrested with 200 explosive devices including Molotov cocktails and grenades and faces multiple charges including possession of a weapon of mass destruction.

  • On Oct. 5, Louis Geri, 41, of Vineland, New Jersey, was arrested outside St. Matthew's Cathedral, Washington, D.C., with a tent holding more than 200 handmade destructive devices ahead of the Red Mass.
  • During a security sweep before the service, Metropolitan Police Department officers encountered Louis Geri, who had previously been barred for setting up a tent on the cathedral steps.
  • Court records show some vials contained nitromethane and devices looked `fully functional`; Geri threatened to ignite them and handed over `written negotiations` notebook pages expressing animosity.
  • Authorities secured the scene, seized devices, and transferred them to the FBI, while a judge ordered Geri held without bond after about 20 minutes delay.
  • The arrest came days after the sentencing of Nicholas Roske and involved FBI and ATF agents; Geri faces counts including manufacture or possession of a weapon of mass destruction in furtherance of a hate crime.
