Man arrested after Vancouver convenience store clerk shot during doorway conversation
Police say surveillance video helped identify the suspect, and a GoFundMe for the injured clerk has raised over $36,000.
On September 6, a shooting at a Mount Pleasant convenience store left clerk Mohammad Ali seriously injured, prompting a Vancouver Police Department investigation that resulted in charges against 32-year-old Victor Sorensen-Avila.
CCTV footage reviewed by VPD Major Crime detectives showed the suspect shooting Ali during an attempted robbery near Main Street and 16th Avenue, enabling officers to identify the assailant.
Kamloops RCMP took Sorensen-Avila into custody on an unrelated matter the same day, while a GoFundMe campaign raised over $36,000 for Ali, whom Market owners call "the heart of Main Street."
The BC Prosecution Service approved charges of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon against Sorensen-Avila, who remains in custody in Kamloops awaiting a bail hearing.
Constable Darren Wong stated that gun violence in Mount Pleasant is "deeply concerning," though police do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the community.
