Malaysia lifted its ban on Grok after X implemented geoblocking and stronger content restrictions following 3 million sexualized images generated, including 23,000 involving children.
- On Jan 23, Malaysia lifted the temporary ban on Elon Musk's Grok chatbot after the state media watchdog confirmed additional security measures.
- Following the outcry, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission suspended Grok on Jan 11 and appointed solicitors to start legal proceedings amid concerns over three million sexualised images.
- X representatives told Malaysian officials in a meeting on Jan 21 they implemented preventive measures, and Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said on Jan 22 the government will lift restrictions once MCMC verifies compliance.
- The government is looking into changing the licence threshold tied to user numbers as X says it does not meet the threshold of at least eight million users.
- The MCMC says licensed platforms must follow Malaysia's legal framework, and X said on Jan 15 it will geoblock certain image generation in jurisdictions where it is illegal, with xAI doing the same for the Grok app.
