Data Centers Not Welcome: New Poll Shows Most Texans Oppose Them in Their Communities
The University of Texas poll found 56% oppose local data centers, with resistance strongest among rural Texans and Democrats.
A poll by The University and the Texas Politics Project published Tuesday shows 56% of Texans oppose building data centers in their communities, with only 29% supporting construction.
Opposition is strongest in rural areas where 62% of residents oppose local data centers, as James Henson, Director of the Texas Politics Project, noted that developers seek plentiful land and limited regulatory oversight.
The survey of 1,200 registered voters revealed 71% of Democratic voters oppose such projects, while GOP voters remain more divided with 44% opposed and 42% in favor.
Gov Greg Abbott and Gov Dan Patrick have directed state regulators to explore stricter oversight of data center energy and water usage and the sales tax exemption costing the state over $1 billion annually.
With only 17% of data centers responding to The Texas Water Development Board survey, Rep Trent Ashby and Rep Brad Buckley are planning legislation for the upcoming session to mandate transparency and protect future water supplies.
