Major Retailer to Shut All Stores in England Early Ahead of World Cup Semi-Final
The retailer said staff and shoppers can get home before the 8pm kick-off, while Tesco is also adjusting hours for the tournament.
Smyths Toys Superstores will close all English branches at 6pm on Wednesday, July 15, allowing staff and customers to watch the World Cup semi-final against Argentina.
Tesco Managing Director UK Operations Kevin Tindall announced that if England reaches the final on Sunday, July 19, Express stores will close early at 7:30pm to let colleagues celebrate.
The Ship, an independent pub in East Tilbury, will shut at 6pm on Wednesday so staff can watch the match with family and close friends.
Conversely, The Great Lyde in Yeovil remains closed due to a "major electrical issue" reported July 8, forcing the popular fanzone to miss the semi-final.
England's World Cup success has driven significant pub spending, with a 244.3 per cent rise during the Ghana match, as thousands of fans travel to Atlanta for the semi-final.
