Major rescue operation after Australian coal mine roof collapses
- On January 2, 2026 a roof collapsed in the underground section of the Curragh coal mine near Blackwater, shortly after 3pm, with one man hospitalized and another unaccounted for, Queensland Police said.
- The incident in the Mammoth Underground — part of the 256-square-kilometre Curragh mine site — happened about 1 kilometre into the underground workings, whose operations began in December 2024.
- Responders, including the Queensland Mines and Rescue Service, recovered two workers safely while crews continued searching for a third, with Resources Safety and Health Queensland on site.
- Mammoth Underground management said operations were suspended and response teams were coordinating, cooperating with authorities while police assist partner agencies and workplace support is provided.
- Past safety incidents at Curragh — including a November 2021 fatal injury — highlight its history of serious incidents, and Resources Safety and Health Queensland confirmed its involvement in oversight.
