Justice Department Finds UCLA Law School Illegally Used Race in Admissions
The Justice Department said UCLA Law rejected comparable white and Asian applicants while admitting Black and Hispanic students under admissions practices it calls unlawful.
- On Thursday, the Justice Department found that the UCLA Law School illegally considered race in admissions, discriminating against Asian applicants in its 2023, 2024, and 2025 classes.
- Affirmative action in college admissions has been illegal since a 2023 Supreme Court ruling. California voters ended affirmative action in 1997, prompting the University system to implement race-neutral measures to increase diversity.
- Department investigators found UCLA Law staff instructed applicants during a "Diversity Admissions Open House" to reveal their race. Additionally, half of admitted Black applicants had LSAT scores at or below 90% of admitted white applicants in 2024 and 2025 combined.
- UCLA Law School denied the findings, stating "Students are admitted through a comprehensive, merit-based review process that considers each applicant's achievements and experiences." The Justice Department now seeks a voluntary resolution or potential legal action.
- President Donald Trump's administration has ramped up scrutiny of college admissions processes, also accusing Berkeley Law School, the University of California, San Diego, and Duke Law School of discriminatory practices against white and Asian applicants.
