Major hotel chains cancel reservations, boot guests worldwide with little warning

  • On Nov. 9, Marriott International abruptly ended its licensing agreement with Sonder Holdings, saying Sonder defaulted and directing guests staying at Sonder properties to vacate on short notice.
  • Sonder Holdings, short-term rental company, says it is winding down operations and seeking liquidation after failed financing and delayed Marriott integration, with Q2 2025 results showing losses and a stockholders' deficit of more than $715 million.
  • Sonder's global footprint includes thousands of units—7,700 apartments in about 140 properties and 9,000 units across 40 cities—with some guests reporting belongings packed in plastic bags and steeply higher alternative costs.
  • On Tuesday, Marriott's FAQ directed guests who booked through Marriott channels to contact their credit card issuing bank to initiate a refund request, reversing earlier refund promises.
  • Sonder employees were also dismissed after the split, compounding fallout while travel industry advisers warn re-accommodating customers may be difficult during the busy holiday season, and Marriott says supporting guests is an immediate priority.
