New England Warden Service Pilot Dies in Plane Crash
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash of a Cessna 185F after the lone occupant died, officials said.
On Tuesday, a Maine Warden Service plane crashed near Schoolhouse Pond in Avon around 11 a.m., killing the lone pilot, a game warden. The Maine Department confirmed the fatality.
The Federal Aviation Administration identified the aircraft as a Cessna A185F, while a witness told Total Coverage reporter that winds in the area were very strong at the time of the crash.
Investigating the crash, the National Transportation Safety Board will lead the probe while the Maine Department and Public Safety handle the scene; Franklin County Sheriff personnel and Responders arrived Tuesday.
In a statement, the Maine Department said, "We are heartbroken," calling the death a "devastating loss for the Maine Warden Service" and the people of Maine.
Gov. Janet Mills and Tim Peabody, acting commissioner of the Maine DIFW, will hold a 3:30 p.m. press event today at the Maine Department headquarters at 353 Water in Augusta.
