Maine communities mourn the 27-year-old firefighter killed in a lumber mill explosion
On Friday, a massive fire and explosion at Robbins Lumber in Searsmont, Maine, killed a 27-year-old firefighter and injured at least 11 others.
Roughly two dozen fire departments responded to the massive blaze, which tore through a silo at the mill, according to the state fire marshal's office.
Shortly after word of the explosion spread online, the Fraternity Village General Store in Searsmont began soliciting donations; within two hours, the store's back room filled with cases of water and Gatorade.
First responders and community members lined roads Saturday to honor firefighter Andrew Cross as his remains were escorted about 46 miles from Augusta to a funeral home in Belfast, Maine.
Robbins Lumber will not operate in the near future as the cause remains under investigation; family spokesperson Christian Halsted called the fire a "hugely devastating day for the family.
