Mahmood to set out plan to deport grooming gang leader
Mahmood plans emergency changes to close a 1971 immigration loophole after 14 years in prison, as Pakistan is not expected to accept Ahmed.
- Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will outline proposals on Monday to amend a 1971 law preventing the deportation of Rochdale grooming gang leader Shabir Ahmed, who was released from prison earlier this month.
- Ahmed, convicted in 2012 for exploiting girls as young as 13, cannot be deported because the 55-year-old Immigration Act prohibits the removal of Commonwealth citizens who arrived in the UK more than 50 years ago.
- Since his release on July 2, Ahmed has been living in 24-hour staffed accommodation with a GPS electronically monitored tag, while some victims said they felt 'frightened' and 'unsafe' at his release.
- Pakistan is reportedly unlikely to accept the deportee, as the country demands the extradition of political dissidents from the UK, leaving Downing Street 'exploring every available option' to facilitate his removal.
- The Government is considering whether to implement changes through emergency legislation or as an amendment to the Immigration and Asylum Bill, which the Commons is scheduled to debate today.
