Embraer, Mahindra Choose Nagpur for Potential C-390 Assembly Line in India
The proposed hub would handle assembly, integration and supply-chain work as Embraer says India could order 60 to 80 C-390 aircraft.
- On Thursday, Embraer and Mahindra Group identified Nagpur, India, as the potential location for a final assembly line for the C-390 Millennium military transport aircraft, pending selection for the Indian Air Force's Medium Transport Aircraft programme.
- The partnership aims to advance the C-390 for the IAF's MTA programme, which seeks to replace its aging fleet of Soviet-era AN-32 and IL-76 transport planes with modern capability.
- Vinod Sahay, Member of the Group Executive Board at Mahindra Group, said the companies are preparing an industrial ecosystem in Nagpur to support the programme at scale.
- With India expected to order 60 to 80 aircraft, the C-390 represents a strategic market opportunity featuring a 26-tonne payload capacity and capability to operate from unpaved runways.
- Competing against the Airbus Defence and Space A-400M and Lockheed Martin's C-130 Hercules, the Nagpur facility would progressively integrate Indian aerospace companies into the supply chain, subject to programme award.
