Magnitude 7.3 earthquake recorded off Alaska coast; tsunami warning issued
SOUTH OF SAND POINT, ALASKA, JUL 16 – A magnitude 7.3 earthquake triggered tsunami warnings along 700 miles of Alaska's southern coast but caused no major damage, officials said.
- About 54 miles south of Sand Point, Alaska, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck on July 16, 2025, at 12:37 p.m., USGS said.
- Alaska lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire, with the Alaska-Aleutian subduction zone producing more magnitude 8+ quakes last century than any other region.
- The U.S. Tsunami Center said the alert covered roughly 700-mile stretch from near Homer to Unimak Pass.
- The tsunami warning was lowered to an advisory by 1:50 p.m. and canceled by 2:45 p.m., ending the immediate alert for Southcentral and Southwest Alaska.
- The Alaska Earthquake Center has recorded over 20 aftershocks, with the largest at magnitude 5.2, and USGS estimates more than a 90% chance of magnitude 5+ quakes next week.
