On Wednesday, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Amami region of Kagoshima Prefecture, with the Japan Meteorological Agency reporting the epicenter off the coast of Yoron Island at 50 kilometers underground.
The quake measured an upper 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in Yoron, with a weak 5 observed in China and intensities of 4 recorded in Amagi and Wadomari.
Local police in Yoron reported no casualties or significant property damage, though the agency cautioned that intensity 5 shaking can cause unsecured furniture and dishes to topple.
During a Wednesday news conference, the JMA warned residents that falling rocks and landslides pose increased risk in areas with particularly strong shaking, urging heightened alert.
The agency warned that similar-intensity quakes could occur over the next week, especially within two to three days, as data shows such tremors follow major earthquakes in around 10% to 20% of cases.
