Two Cheetahs Released Into Wild in Kuno; CM Yadav Says M.P. Now Recognised as ‘Cheetah State’
The release brings India’s cheetah population to 57 as officials expand Project Cheetah and prepare more animals for free roaming.
- On Monday, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav released two female cheetahs, identified as CCV-2 and CCV-3, into the wild at Kuno National Park in Sheopur district. The cheetahs sprinted into the forest after Yadav opened the enclosure gates.
- The cheetahs, part of a batch brought from Botswana in February, were released following completion of their mandatory quarantine and acclimatization period. This advance supports Project Cheetah's goal to restore the endangered species and establish a sustainable population in India.
- India's total cheetah population has reached 57, including domestically born cubs, following this latest arrival. The reintroduction initiative began in 2022 with eight cheetahs from Namibia, followed by 12 from South Africa in 2023.
- "Madhya Pradesh has scripted a new chapter in history," Chief Minister Yadav told ANI, expressing pride in the state's recognition as the Cheetah State. Officials are preparing to relocate additional cheetahs to sanctuaries including Gandhi Sagar and Nauradehi.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the reintroduction project about three and a half years ago to restore the endangered species and strengthen ecological restoration. The initiative seeks to increase cheetah numbers and prepare animals for free hunting and roaming across Kuno and beyond.
