European leaders pledge unity after recent tensions ahead of NATO summit
The leaders backed a stronger European defence role and a joint approach with the United States as tensions with Washington persisted.
On Wednesday, European leaders including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met in Berlin to reaffirm their defense partnership ahead of next month's NATO Summit in Ankara.
Behind the summit, tensions persist following spats with President Donald Trump, the collapse of the FCAS fighter project, and criticism from Rome and Warsaw over the E3 group's exclusive Ukraine talks.
Leaders offered a warm farewell to Starmer, who announced he will step down, while Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated, "We have become one in many ways again."
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared, "We want to renew the Alliance. We are strengthening its European pillar," emphasizing a unified defense approach.
Before the July 7-8 NATO Summit in Ankara, Merz will inform President Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of the discussions, stressing that "Unilateral national actions in our defence policy would be a mistake.
After open conflicts with Trump, Europe's five major powers are trying to set the line ahead of a fateful NATO summit in Ankara. There is a lot at stake, says a NATO expert.
