M6 Closed for Hours After Lorry Crash with Huge Delays
National Highways said the closure may last for hours while emergency crews clear the jack-knifed lorry and inspect the carriageway.
Following a jack-knifed HGV and fuel spillage, the M6 southbound between J36 and J34 remains closed while emergency services manage the complex recovery operation.
National Highways reported the HGV "has jack knifed across all three lanes" this morning, prompting an initial full carriageway closure in both directions while emergency teams responded.
Severe delays of 35 minutes affect southbound traffic, while the northbound carriageway has reopened with 10 minutes of delay; drivers are advised to follow diversion symbols via the A6 through Carnforth.
Stagecoach Cumbria suspended service 49 due to the closure, and the 555 bus route between Kendal and Lancaster faces significant delays as Highways warns lane closures will continue.
The motorway is expected to remain closed "for some time" while crews complete safety inspections and fuel contamination checks; authorities urge motorists to avoid the area as recovery continues.
