Lukashenko pardoned 42 political prisoners

Lukashenko pardoned 42 political prisoners, a move that is believed to be aimed at the West in an attempt to ease sanctions, while more than a thousand remain in prison.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko today signed a law pardoning nearly 8,000 prisoners on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of victory in World War II.

A pardon is said to have been granted "in advance of Victory Day" among the pardoned 18 women and 24 men, 13 of whom have chronic illnesses, one with disability, 24 have minor children, two have many children, 10 are over 50 years of age, and one has reached retirement age.
