Full Emergency Declared at Bengaluru Airport After Hijack Threat Note Found on Lucknow-Bound IndiGo Flight

Authorities said the note proved to be a hoax after a 51-minute flight returned and security teams searched the aircraft.

  • On Saturday, IndiGo flight 6E-451 made an emergency return to Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru after cabin crew discovered a handwritten hijack threat note in the lavatory shortly after departing for Lucknow from Terminal 1.
  • The threatening message reportedly read: "This flight is going to hijack at 6.30, ignore and see the consequences." Pilots immediately alerted Air Traffic Control and sought priority clearance to return to Bengaluru following standard safety protocols.
  • According to flight-tracking website Flightradar24, the aircraft remained airborne for 51 minutes before landing safely. Security agencies, including the Central Industrial Security Force, moved the aircraft to an isolated bay where bomb disposal personnel conducted thorough inspections.
  • Bomb disposal personnel found no suspicious items and the threat was declared a hoax. IndiGo stated: "We regret the inconvenience caused to our customers and are making all efforts to minimise it, including offering them refreshments and sharing regular updates."
  • Officials are examining the passenger list and CCTV footage to identify the note's author and establish circumstances surrounding the incident. This follows a similar scare in October in Kolkata, where a message reading "Bomb inside aircraft" was found on a flight arriving from Phuket.
