Thieves stole nine Napoleonic-era jewels including Empress Eugénie's crown, with eight items still missing, in a 7-minute daylight raid, officials said.
- On Monday, French authorities reported thieves stole eight items from the Louvre in Paris minutes after it opened.
- Acting around 9:30, Monday, thieves used a truck-mounted ladder and freight elevator to force open a window in the Apollo Gallery, completing the theft within 7 minutes.
- Prosecutors said the recovered crown of Empress Eugénie was dropped and damaged during the heist and contains eight gold eagles, 1,354 diamonds, 1,136 rose-cut diamonds and 56 emeralds.
- Eight of the nine items remain unaccounted for, according to the French culture ministry, and the Louvre remained closed Monday while police continued their investigation and evacuated visitors.
- The Louvre, the largest art museum that welcomed more than 8.5 million visitors last year, houses the Apollo Gallery spanning more than 750,000 square feet near the Mona Lisa, linking the theft to historic heists beginning in 1911.
