Lorry Fire to Block Motorway 'Until Rush Hour' as Smoke Billows Into Sky
Emergency crews are tackling two nearby lorry fires, and National Highways said the closure is likely to extend into the morning peak.
Two separate lorry fires have forced the M25 in Essex to close anti-clockwise between J28 Brentwood and J26 Waltham Abbey, with emergency services responding to both incidents.
Firefighters began tackling the blazes in the early hours after the first incident was reported around 3am. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service is leading the response with specialist recovery teams working to clear the heavy goods vehicles.
National Highways warns of around 72 minutes of delays on approach to the junctions with five miles of congestion currently on the road. The disruption is expected to extend into the morning peak travel period.
Due to long-term roadworks at Gallows Corner, the usual diversion cannot be used. Motorists traveling anti-clockwise between J28 and J26 must exit onto the A12, continue via the A414 and M11, then rejoin via the A10 at junction 25.
National Highways has provided no reopening time, as repairs or clean-up may be required before the road can safely reopen. The closure is expected to significantly impact rush-hour traffic this morning.
