Reform Removes Ukraine Flag From Essex County Council Offices
The change follows Reform UK’s national flag policy and came after 3,783 people were recorded on the Homes for Ukraine scheme in Essex.
On Friday, Reform UK's new administration at Essex County Council replaced the Ukrainian flag outside County Hall with a second British Union Flag, marking a shift in the council's flag display policy.
The change aligns the council with Reform UK's national flag policy, which restricts outdoor displays to official state or armed forces flags, ending the Ukrainian flag's four-year tenure that began after Russia's 2022 invasion.
Council leader Councillor Peter Harris called the replacement a "proud moment," asserting it does not diminish Essex's support for the 3,783 people living locally under the Homes for Ukraine scheme.
Tory opposition boss Lee Scott warned the move risks encouraging "pro-Kremlin politics," while Lib Dem MP Marie Goldman labeled it a "wasted opportunity" that ignores British values.
Ukrainian Society president Vladyslav Shuliar said the community respects the council's decision and hopes the removed flag receives a "respectful new home," noting the ongoing war remains important.
