London housing project wins top architecture award
Judges praised the 157-home scheme for blending high-density housing into parkland and for its site-specific design on a constrained plot.
On Thursday, Lion Green Road in Coulsdon won the 2026 Stirling Prize from the Royal Institute of British Architects , providing 157 homes across five distinctive blocks for Croydon Council.
Replacing a former car park on a steeply sloping site varying in height by eight metres, the project was praised by judges for its "inventive and site-specific response to a highly constrained plot."
RIBA president Chris Williamson described the scheme as a "new approach to higher density development," while Mary Duggan said the project proves "architectural ambition, social value and generosity can co-exist."
During Thursday's ceremony, Satish Jassal Architects' Rowan Court won the Neave Brown Award for Housing, while Samuel Chisholm Studio and Takero Shimasaki Architects' Oru Sutton received the Reinvention Award.
The Croydon Council-commissioned scheme was the bookies' least favorite with odds of 6/1, ultimately defeating other shortlisted projects including an expansion of Pembroke College at the University of Cambridge.
