Man charged after 64-year-old bus driver left in critical condition following attack on a London bridge
Police say a 32-year-old man was arrested as detectives seek witnesses and footage after the driver was flown to hospital.
A 64-year-old bus driver remains in critical condition after being assaulted on London's Battersea Bridge early Monday. Police officers administered emergency first aid before transporting him to hospital by air ambulance.
The victim was allegedly attacked following a confrontation on the pavement while the bus was stationary at a stop shortly before 12:30am. The incident occurred on one of London's busiest bridges.
Police arrested a 32-year-old man at the scene on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, and he remains in custody. Detective Superintendent Fiona Van Kampen urged witnesses to submit dash-cam or mobile phone footage.
Siwan Hayward, director of security, policing and enforcement at Transport for London , said "Our thoughts are with the bus driver, his family and his friends following this incident." Staff have the right to work without fear.
During last year's London Tube strikes, bus drivers faced increased abuse while serving as frontline staff. TfL remains committed to ensuring all staff have access to safe facilities while carrying out their roles.
