Lockheed Martin Breaks Ground on Alabama Missile Plant

The 87,000-square-foot center will nearly double manufacturing capacity and support THAAD and Next Generation Interceptor production, Lockheed said.

  • On Thursday, Lockheed Martin broke ground on an 87,000-square-foot Munitions Production Center in Troy, Alabama, as part of a U.S. push to expand missile output and strengthen the defense industrial base.
  • Lockheed Chairman, President and CEO Jim Taiclet stated the plant is part of an $8 billion to $9 billion investment plan through 2030, calling it "an important step forward for our nation's defense industrial base."
  • Designated "Munitions Production Center Building 47," the facility will house production lines for Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, interceptors and Next Generation Interceptor missiles, nearly doubling the site's 100,000 square feet of existing manufacturing capacity.
  • Building 47 will create a significant number of jobs over the next three years, adding to the nearly 4,000 employees Lockheed already has in Alabama; nationwide, the company plans to add about 4,500 frontline workers.
  • Lockheed plans modernization of more than 20 facilities across Arkansas, Alabama, Florida, Massachusetts and Texas, and secured framework agreements to quadruple production of THAAD and Precision Strike Missile units following recent Department of War contracts.
