Maine Senate Candidate Faces New Allegations as Dems Weigh Next Steps
The campaign disputes claims from former girlfriends as Democrats weigh whether the race’s presumptive nominee can stay on track.
On Thursday, The New York Times reported allegations from former girlfriends of Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner, who described his past behavior as "unsettling."
Since launching his campaign, Platner, a combat veteran who has spoken about PTSD, has faced multiple controversies including a sexting scandal admitted last week and offensive online posts.
Former girlfriend Lyndsey Fifield alleged Platner knew his tattoo resembled a Nazi symbol, though Platner's campaign "strongly disputes" the claims, calling them politically motivated.
The situation has divided Democrats, with Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania becoming an outspoken critic, while Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware questioned the focus on Platner's conduct.
Maine's primary occurs Tuesday, and Platner has not indicated he will drop out, though state law allows the Democratic Party to replace a nominee if they withdraw by the second Monday in July.
