Cyberattack Cripples UC, CSU Schools During Finals, Thousands Of Records Stolen
The outage disrupted final exams for students as Instructure investigated claims that hackers captured data from hundreds of millions of users.
On Thursday, May 7, a cyberattack targeting Instructure caused widespread Canvas outages affecting California State University, UCLA, and thousands of educational institutions nationwide during finals week.
The hacking group Shiny Hunters claimed responsibility for the breach, alleging Instructure had ignored previous warnings after a separate cybersecurity incident on April 29.
Shiny Hunters threatened to release data from nearly 9,000 schools and 275 million individuals on May 12, 2026, unless affected institutions negotiate a "settlement" with the group.
Instructure announced Canvas was available again for most users by late Thursday night, though the University of Illinois and other schools have already extended deadlines or rescheduled exams.
Disruptions are expected to ripple throughout the week as schools assess potential vulnerabilities, while authorities have not confirmed the perpetrator's identity and the situation remains fluid.
