A bill banning DEI in Ohio public colleges is opposed by students, teachers
- The Ohio Senate and House passed Senate Bill 1, also known as the "Enact Advance Ohio Higher Education Act", on Wednesday, sending the controversial measure to Governor Mike DeWine for his consideration.
- Senate Bill 1 aims to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion programs at Ohio's 14 public universities and 23 public community colleges, prohibit faculty from striking, and simplify the process of firing poorly-performing tenured professors.
- The bill passed the Senate with a 20-11 vote and the House with a 58-34 vote, with Republicans arguing it will end liberal indoctrination and enhance diversity of thought on campuses by including more conservative viewpoints.
- Rep. Desiree Tims called SB1 'toxic', while sponsoring State Senator Jerry Cirino stated that many of the DEI exceptions will likely become moot with activities going on at the federal government right now, and State Sen. Bill DeMora called the bill 'cow manure'.
- Opponents, including the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus, Democratic Caucus members, university professors, and students, are urging Governor DeWine to veto the bill, arguing it is a threat to free speech and academic freedom, and could negatively impact Ohio's ability to attract top faculty.
