The President of the United States of America (U.S.) said that the possibility of establishing a US military base in Lithuania would be considered, but Lithuanian politicians responded skeptically to the statement, although they said that such statements were encouraging, as yet there was no indication that any specific plans or actions were being taken in that regard.
US troops, numbering around 1,000, have been stationed in Lithuania periodically since 2014, but their presence was scaled back this summer.
