Lions Player Andrews Died From Aortic Dissection
The Lions Rugby Company confirmed Wednesday that 31-year-old lock Hyron Andrews died of an aortic dissection after passing away suddenly last Friday in France, just before the team's Champions Cup debut against La Rochelle.
French authorities conducted an autopsy revealing Andrews' death resulted from "a tear in the aorta , which led to a significant accumulation of blood within the sac surrounding the heart."
Emergency personnel were unable to revive Andrews after he was found unresponsive in his room at the Atalante-Relais Thalasso Hotel on Friday; the former Sale Sharks player had only recently joined the Lions after two years in England.
Despite the tragedy, the Lions fulfilled Saturday's fixture against La Rochelle with both teams observing a minute's silence, though former England internationals Chris Ashton and Danny Care questioned the decision to play so soon after the death.
A timeline for the return of Andrews' body to South Africa has not yet been determined, the Lions added, as the Andrews family requested privacy during the repatriation process.
