Lifeboat and coastguard scrambled as tug boat sinks near Oban
Responders recovered lifejackets, an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon, and large debris after the workboat sank unattended at its mooring, with no injuries reported.
- Crews from HM Coastguard and RNLI Oban Lifeboat Station were alerted shortly after 7.30am on Tuesday to a tug boat sinking at moorings in the Sound of Kerrera off Oban.
- RNLI Oban Lifeboat confirmed the workboat had sunk at her mooring, leaving flotsam and debris, and photos from the scene showed the vessel on its side before it fully submerged.
- Recovery teams landed recovered safety equipment and the EPIRB ashore into Coastguard care, with the manager of Kerrera Marina in a RIB assisting to collect lifejackets, life-rings and debris.
- The lifeboat crew confirmed, after searching the vessel and checking with the vessel's owner, that nobody was onboard and no one was reported missing; the response was stood down pending any new information.
- A major rescue operation unfolded, with an HM Coastguard helicopter, Oban Coastguard Rescue Team and an RNLI lifeboat from Oban attending as images showed the vessel listing then fully submerged.
