Police Officer Catches Baby Thrown From Window of House on Fire
Dispatchers lost contact as an officer caught the infant and helped rescue the mother from the burning home, police said.
On Friday, May 15, 2026, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officer Arnett caught a baby dropped from a second-story window of a burning home on Washington Avenue near James Street, then assisted the mother to safety.
Dispatchers remained in contact with the trapped mother as fire damaged the interior staircase, leaving the pair stranded on the second floor in the Edison neighborhood, forcing firefighters to use ladders to reach them.
After securing the infant, Arnett positioned a ladder beneath the window to extract the mother from the burning building. Police confirmed both were unharmed but transported to the hospital for a precautionary examination.
Residents living in the other two units of the home evacuated independently and were uninjured. Arnett then donned turnout gear and assisted in extinguishing flames that had spread into the attic.
Newly-Released body camera footage from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety captures the harrowing rescue moment. Investigators are currently working to determine what caused the blaze that damaged the home's roof.
