Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth Appointed Next Chief of Army Staff, Will Assume Office on June 30
Lt. Gen. Dhiraj Seth will replace General Upendra Dwivedi and is set to lead the Army through August 2028, the Defence Ministry said.
On Saturday, the government appointed Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth as the next Chief of the Army Staff. He will assume office on June 30, succeeding General Upendra Dwivedi.
Currently serving as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, Seth brings nearly 40 years of military experience spanning operational, strategic, and institutional roles. He assumed the Vice Chief position in April this year.
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Seth was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in 1986. He commanded two major operational Army Commands—the South Western Command and the Southern Command—a rare distinction among officers.
The Defence Ministry announced Seth will serve in the substantive rank of General until August 31, 2028. His appointment follows top-level organizational changes within the Indian Army finalized in April.
Seth assumes leadership amid evolving regional security challenges and ongoing force modernization efforts. His extensive counter-insurgency experience in Jammu and Kashmir and operational responsibilities along India's western front position him to address these priorities.
