The son of Marshal Haftar, who runs the National Liberation Army, in power in eastern Libya, was visiting Niamey on 23 May. The border area is home to rebel groups hostile to the Niger junta.

General Saddam Haftar, son of the commander of the Libyan National Army (ANL), Khalifa Haftar, was received in Niamey by Nigerian President Abdourahamane Chiani, head of the ruling military junta. This official visit was aimed at deepening security and military cooperation between the Libyan Cyrenaic and Niger, two key actors in the control of the Central Sahel.
