Woolworths has launched an investigation after a live frog was discovered in a bag of lettuce at its Esperance store in Western Australia, with the couple who purchased it releasing the frog, named Greg, into a local dam.
Dr. Jodi Rowley, an amphibian expert at the Australian Museum Research Institute, stated it is not uncommon for frogs to "hitchhike" across states on produce, with the frog likely traveling from eastern Australia in ventilated lettuce packaging.
New Zealand couple Laura Jones and Billie Le Pine found the frog when their flatmate opened the package, sharing a TikTok video that garnered 4.7m views by Monday. Le Pine said, "That was the most random thing I've ever encountered while opening a bag of lettuce."
In a statement, Woolworths confirmed it is investigating the incident with suppliers "as a priority," describing the situation as "an isolated event with no other reported cases."
A spokesperson for the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development reminded consumers to report any insects, animals, or plants found in packaging, particularly those arriving from interstate or overseas, to help track biosecurity issues.
