Legendary Parksville sand sculpting & beach festival underway
The five-and-a-half-week festival features themed works and a new blind judging process for 30 sculptors from seven countries.
- The Quality Foods Sand Sculpting Competition opened on Friday in Parksville, featuring 30 master sculptors from around the globe competing through Sunday at 2 p.m.
- Competitors began crafting their "Beauties and Beasts" creations on Thursday, using a specialized "pounding up" technique to establish solid bases. Soloists received 10 yards of sand; doubles teams were issued 15 yards.
- Parksville Beach Festival Society President Cheryl Dill announced a new anonymous judging process, modeled after Revere Beach's competition in Boston. Awards will be presented on-site early Sunday evening.
- Mayor Doug O'Brien led the ribbon-cutting ceremony, celebrating the festival's community impact supporting dozens of Oceanside-area non-profit organizations. Entry is by a suggested $5 donation per person.
- Running until August 16, the Parksville Beach Festival expects 110,000 to 120,000 visitors to explore the site. Attendees are invited to vote for the People's Choice Award.
